Who put a Merkur wing on an old BMW 3 series?!

I may have to hand in my Jalop card, because I initially thought it was a 3 series with a Merkur wing. A Cosworth existing in the US (and LHD?!) hadn’t even entered my mind.

The Escort RS Cosworth came out in 19 92. The Impreza wasn’t facelifted to look like that until 1998. It started out looking like this.

Except that Cosworth designed this car in 89, and Subaru ran the Loyale in WRC until 94.. sooo

Erm, what?

A fifth gen Ford Escort Cosworth was a BMW 3 Series.

And Ford’s ‘whaletail’ was a ‘Merkur Wing’.

Okay, you never got these in the U.S. so I’ll let you off. Lol.

After all at my sister’s wedding my 40 year old cousin thought a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow was an ‘American Cadillac’. Sigh.

How could you confuse that car with a 3series?

The more curious question to me is why did a Brit have a LHD one? (also, props to whoever in Cali went to the bother to import one..)

I can see the Escort, from very, very far away, being confused with a E36 Compact

I didnt think about the E36 compact, but yeah, I can see the confusion from afar now too.....

Why the need to specify “Ameri can ”? Are there non-American Cadillacs?

Pfft...FAKE NEWS!

While my responses were mostly tongue in cheek, the Subaru is definitely the more well known by the average person

And that design looks even more like the Cosworth (the face at least) ...I wonder which one actually got designed first...I think they were both introduced in ‘92

We have LHDs here. Certain cars can be hard to find unmolested after a time, also it may of been cheaper on the continent than a similar one in the U.K. as these can demand a premium as people try to rekindle their youth.

In the U.K. these go for £26,000 for a bad/average one up to £99,000 for a great one with just 2,589 miles on the clock . (£55,000 commonly).

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201907059771307?advertising-location=at_cars&make=FORD&radius=1500&sort=price-asc&keywords=cosworth&onesearchad=Used&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&model=ESCORT&aggregatedTrim=RS&postcode=ca25xx&page=1

In Europe they go for between 23,000 and 56,000 Euros (averaging 30,000Euros (£28,000) ).

The guy thought this was a Cadillac, I just walked away from him towards my sister in the car rather than ask him anything or stand looking at him incredulously. Lol.

Maybe someone really did slap a Merkur wing on a 3 series.

In the U.S. maybe, but arguable in Europe, Asia, South America, etc...

Yes, it was a Ford Europe thing.

Current prices.

The LHD ones in Europe (averaging £30,000) are quite a bit cheaper than the RHD ones in the U.K. averaging £50,000).

Well, that’d explain it. I was thinking it’d been in the UK from new, and if you have both having the wheel on the correct side sounds easier if all other things wer e equal..

Nah. The only people I know who buy new LHD is if the car is only available in LHD (*certain Renaults) or a few that often work in Holland, France or Germany. Apparently some found it incredibly annoying trying to get tickets for parking or putting money in some unattended toll booths.

Cars like the Escort RS Cosworth,

Kinja'd!!!

Ford Sierra RS Cosworth.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Peugeot 205GTi.

Kinja'd!!!

Renault Clio 3.0 V6.

Kinja'd!!!

and many others have fond memories for Brits in their youth. Probably more so fro Brits than most or many other Euro pean countries.
